Ahead of this month’s genÂeral elections, candidates of the various political ofÂfices in Imo state yesÂterday shunned a peace accord meeting initiated by the state police comÂmand.
Police officers at the meeting which was slatÂed for 10am waited till 1pm with no single candiÂdate of any political party in sight.
Even the Assistant InÂspector General of Police, Usman Gwary of Zone 9 who was supposed to be special guest at the meetÂing left in anger after waiting for several hours without the candidates turning up for the peace parley.
However, briefing jourÂnalists after the botched meeting, the state comÂmand public relations ofÂficer, Andrew Enwerem expressed disappointment over the attitude of the candidates which he deÂscribed as lackadaisical.
Enwerem stated that the aborted meeting was the second time the parÂley would be organized, noting that the non-attenÂdance by the candidates is an indication that they were not serious.
He explained that the motive of the meeting was to educate the candidates on the purpose of a vioÂlence free election as well as making them to sign a peace accord on their parÂticipation at the election.
