Liverpool paid the price for failing to take their chances as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur.
James Milner gave Liverpool a deserved lead from the penalty spot just before the break but Spurs fought their way back into the game after the hour mark and secured a point through Danny Rose’s neat finish.
Philippe Coutinho had a golden chance to open the scoring on five minutes when he received a Roberto Firmino pass inside the area, but he failed to get enough power on the shot, allowing Michel Vorm to make a fine save with his boot.
Both sides had chances during a frenetic first half, with stand-in keeper Vorm making a series of impressive interventions, but Liverpool broke the deadlock through a Milner penalty just before the break when referee Robert Madley ruled that Erik Lamela had fouled Firmino in the area.
Liverpool continued to attack in the second half, with Joel Matip’s header clipping the top of the bar before Sadio Mane saw an effort ruled out for a marginal offside in the build-up.
Spurs eventually provided a response, and Christian Eriksen fired over the bar when presented with a good chance on 62 minutes before Toby Alderweireld saw a header pushed wide by Simon Mignolet.
The home side drew level on 72 minutes, with Rose finding the bottom corner with a precise finish after Lamela had diverted an Eric Dier cross, to secure a share of the spoils.
