The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission on Wednesday night
arrested a former military governor of
Kaduna State and chieftain of the
ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),
Jafaru Isa.
Isa becomes the first chieftain of the
APC arrested by the EFCC since the
beginning of a sweeping probe into the
alleged diversion of $2.1 billion meant
for arms purchase by officials of the
immediate-past administration.
The APC chieftain who served in the
presidential transition committee
ahead of President Muhammadu
Buhari’s inauguration in May, is also
believed to be a friend of the
embattled former national security
adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
Isa was arrested at his Abuja residence
located at Ajayi Crowther Street,
Asokoro, having failed to honour an
earlier invitation from the anti-graft
agency.
Operatives of the EFCC were said to
have invaded Isa’s residence around
9pm, and then whisked him away a
few minutes later.
The retired brigadier general was
invited last week to appear before the
EFCC on Wednesday (yesterday) to
clear the air on “some questionable
receipts†of over N100 million from
former NSA, Dasuki.
Isa in reaction to the invitation wrote a
letter to the EFCC through his lawyer,
seeking a postponement of his
appearance date on the grounds of the
death of a relative.
Dissatisfied with the failure of the APC
chieftain to honour its invitation, the
EFCC moved in to arrest him, to avoid
needless waste of time, as an official of
the commission was said to have put it.
